Our first "Short Walks for Short People" took place last Saturday, July 17, at the Schine Preserve/Natural Playground. We had a large group of kids and grownups who met some trees, watched butterflies, and collected treasures on the short walk to the playground. At the playground, the kids had a great time exploring - some kids for the first time, and some (like my children) were repeat visitors. The playground has changed even since the last time I was there in June. The teepee has been added to and the elvin village has new props (moss mattress). It's great to see how playful spirits and nature lovers, young and old, can be creative when given the materials and freedom to do so. I watched the sorting table be both a scientific exploration table, a grocery store, and a light saber battleground in just a few minutes.
Many thanks to Karin Slayton who brought her guitar and recycled instruments to the playspace, and was both entertaining and inspiring. The kids had fun singing/playing and I am excited to make my own bottlecap shaker.
